A white hole is a strange idea in space.

It is a hypothetical region of space and time. Scientists think of it as the opposite of a black hole. In a black hole, nothing can escape once it gets inside. However, a white hole works in a different way. Energy, light, and matter can all escape from it. The tricky part is that you cannot enter a white hole from the outside. It acts like a one-way door that only lets things out.

How does a white hole work? It follows the rules of math called the Einstein field equations. These equations describe how massive objects curve space and time. In some math models, a white hole exists in the past. A black hole exists in the future. This makes them opposites in a timeline. Some theories suggest they might be linked by a bridge. This bridge is called an Einstein-Rosen bridge, or a wormhole. A wormhole could connect a black hole in one universe to a white hole in another. In this case, the white hole is like an exit door.

People have studied these ideas for a long time. In the 1930s, Robert Oppenheimer and Hartland Snyder introduced white holes. They found them as a solution to Einstein's equations. Later, in 1964, a cosmologist named Igor Novikov put the idea forward. Nikolai Kardashev also helped develop these ideas. Even the famous scientist Stephen Hawking studied them. He looked at how black holes emit radiation. He argued that a white hole might be the time-reversed version of a black hole. This means if you played a black hole's history backward, it would look like a white hole.

There are many specific facts about these objects. White holes have mass, charge, and angular momentum. These are properties that describe how much stuff is there and how it moves. A white hole can be part of a "maximally extended" Schwarzschild metric. This is a math term for a black hole that has no charge and does not spin. In this model, the white hole and black hole exist eternally. Some scientists even think supermassive black holes could spawn supermassive white holes. These huge black holes live at the center of every galaxy.

It is hard to imagine a white hole without thinking of black holes. Think of a black hole like a deep pit that you can only fall into. A white hole is like a fountain that only sprays outward. You can see the water, but you cannot jump into the spray to get inside. While black holes come from dying stars, we do not know how white holes form. There is no known way in nature to make one. They might have existed since the Big Bang. For now, they remain a fascinating mystery of science.
