General relativity

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

General relativity is a famous theory about how gravity works. Albert Einstein published this big idea in May 1916. It is a geometric theory, which means it uses shapes to explain the world. Most scientists use it today to understand how huge objects move in space. It goes much deeper than older ideas about gravity. It helps us see how the entire universe behaves.

This theory works by joining space and time together. We call this combined thing spacetime. Imagine spacetime is like a fabric that can bend. Heavy objects like stars or planets sit on this fabric. Their weight causes the spacetime to curve or dent. This curve is what we feel as gravity. As the scientist John Wheeler said, matter tells spacetime how to curve. Then, that curved spacetime tells matter how to move.

Einstein spent many years working on this hard job. He began a long search for this theory in 1907. He used a thought experiment about someone falling freely. After many false starts, he finished his work in 1915. He presented his main equations to the Prussian Academy of Science. These are called the Einstein field equations. They show how matter and radiation change the shape of spacetime.

General relativity predicts many amazing things in our universe. It predicts black holes, which are places where nothing can escape. It also predicts gravitational lensing. This happens when light bends around a heavy object. This can make a single distant star look like many images. Scientists also found gravitational waves, which are ripples in spacetime. The LIGO group has observed these waves directly.

This theory helps us understand the history of everything. It provides a framework for a field called cosmology. This field helped us discover the Big Bang. It also explains why the universe is expanding. Even though it is very complex, the math is considered beautiful. It is still the simplest theory that fits our data. Scientists are still trying to link it to quantum physics.
