White coat

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A white coat is a long jacket.

It is often worn by doctors and scientists. These coats protect their clothes from spills. They are often made of cotton. This makes them easy to wash in hot water. Being white makes it easy to see if they are clean.

In labs, coats help if chemicals spill. Some lab coats have snap buttons. These are easy to pull off fast in an emergency. Some scientists use short sleeves to stay clean.

Others use a "Howie" style coat. This style has a special collar to keep germs away.

Doctors began wearing white coats in the late 1800s. They wanted to show they used science. Before this, some used black coats.

Now, white coats are a symbol of being a professional. In some places, like Argentina, students wear them to school. This shows they are learning. Some nursing schools even hold a white coat ceremony. This is a special event for new students.
