This area is divided into three regional units: Xanthi, Rhodope, and Evros. Together with parts of Macedonia, they form the region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.

The landscape of Western Thrace is quite varied. It consists of deeply cut river valleys and mountain-enclosed basins. These basins vary in size across the terrain. In the north, the Rhodopi mountains form a natural border with Bulgaria. These mountains are covered in dense forest.

The topography creates a mix of open spaces and rugged highlands. This variety of landforms has influenced how people live and travel through the region for thousands of years.

Human history in this region began in the Paleolithic era. During the classical era, the area came under Greek influence. Ancient Greeks established prosperous coastal cities like Sale, Maroneia, and Abdera.

This period made the region a center for medieval Greek commerce and culture.

The Ottoman Empire conquered most of the region in the 14th century. Their rule lasted until the Balkan Wars of 1912–1913. During this time, the population became a mix of Greeks, Turks, and Bulgarians.

The borders shifted constantly during the Balkan Wars and World War I. Bulgaria, Greece, and Turkey all exerted control at different times. Following the Treaty of Neuilly in 1919, the area was under temporary Entente management. In 1920, the San Remo conference assigned Western Thrace to Greece. These conflicts led to large population exchanges that changed the region's ethnic makeup.

Today, Western Thrace has a population of approximately 371,208 people.
