The city's name has evolved through many different cultures and languages. It was originally built on a Thracian settlement called Uskudama. The Roman Emperor Hadrian later reestablished the city and named it Hadrianopolis. This name became Adrianople in English. The Ottoman name, Edirne, is derived from the Greek name. Following the Turkish adoption of the Latin alphabet in 1928, Edirne became the internationally recognized name. In Bulgarian, the city is referred to as Odrin.

Edirne has a long history of major battles and sieges. During the Roman and Byzantine periods, the city saw significant military conflict. In 324, Constantine I defeated Licinius here. Later, in 378, Emperor Valens was killed by the Goths during the Battle of Adrianople. The city was also seized by Khan Krum of Bulgaria in 813. In 1205, the Bulgarian Emperor Kaloyan defeated the Crusaders at the Battle of Adrianople. These frequent conflicts occurred because the city was a vital fortress defending Eastern Thrace and Constantinople.

The Ottoman period brought great importance to the city. In 1362, the Ottomans invaded Thrace under Sultan Murad I. He captured the city and moved the Ottoman capital there from Bursa. Edirne remained the seat of Ottoman power until 1453. At that time, Mehmed the Conqueror took Constantinople and moved the capital there. The city's importance is visible in its many surviving monuments. These include various mosques and medreses, which are traditional Islamic schools.
