For many years, they grew very wealthy through international trade. They were also very important in high finance. This means they worked with large amounts of money for powerful leaders. They rose to great fame during the 1500s.

Some family members, like Antony, even used new sea paths to reach the East. They worked with other rich families, like the Fuggers, to control much of the European economy. The Welsers also helped the mining industry in Cuba. They even found copper there and sent equipment to help with building.

In 1528, the family took part in the colonization of the Americas. King Charles V gave them special rights in a place called Venezuela. He did this because the Welsers helped pay for his election in 1519. The Welsers called this new land Klein-Venedig, which means "little Venice."

They sent many expeditions to explore the area. However, their rule did not last long. By 1546, the Emperor took their rule away after some hard and unfair actions.

History shows that the Welsers were also part of the slave trade. This was a very dark part of their business. In 1532, they bought a sugar mill in Santo Domingo. They paid for it with money, sugar, and four enslaved people.

Over the next 15 years, thousands of enslaved Africans were moved to the Americas. This was a very sad and unfair time for many people.

Not all family members were known for money and trade. Some were famous for being very smart and learned. Philippine Welser was a very well-known woman. She was famous for her beauty and her great learning.
