Web design

technology Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Web design is the craft of making and maintaining websites. It involves many different skills and jobs. Some designers work in teams to finish a project. Other designers do every part of the work alone. This work includes web graphic design and user interface design, which is called UI design. UI design focuses on the parts people click on. Designers also use UX design, or user experience design, to make sites easy to use.

Designing a website happens in several steps. First, designers must think about how a person will use the site. This is called user experience design. They focus on clear labels and easy layouts. Next, they work on the front-end, or the client side. This part includes writing markup code. Designers also use tools like graphics editors to make images. Some people use software to build sites without writing all the code by hand. They might also use a content management system to keep things organized.

History shows us how much the web has changed. In 1989, a scientist named Tim Berners-Lee worked at CERN in Switzerland. He proposed a project that became the World Wide Web. The first website went live at CERN in November 1992. Early websites were very simple and mostly used text. In 1993, Marc Andreessen and Eric Bina created the Mosaic browser. This was a big deal because it could show images and sounds. Before Mosaic, most browsers were mostly text-heavy.

Many important tools and dates shaped the web. The W3C was created in October 1994 to set rules for the web. This helped ensure that different browsers could work together. In 1996, a tool called CSS was introduced by the W3C. CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets, and it helps with the layout of a page. Between 1996 and 1999, the "browser wars" happened. Microsoft and Netscape fought to see which browser would be most popular. By 2001, Microsoft's Internet Explorer had a 96% share of the market.

Today, web design connects to how we use our phones. Since 2012, many people visit websites on mobile devices. This led to a "mobile first" way of working. Designers now make a layout for a small phone screen first. Then, they adapt that design for much larger computer screens.

This helps make sure the web works for everyone. Modern designers also use new standards like HTML5 and CSS3 to build better sites.
