A search engine is a software system that helps you find information on the web.

When you type a query, or a question, into a browser, the engine responds. It usually shows a list of hyperlinks, which are clickable paths to web pages. These results often include short text summaries and images to help you choose. You can even limit your search to specific things like news or videos. This system is part of a huge network of computers called data centers. These centers are spread out all over the entire world.

To work well, a search engine follows a specific way it works. It uses automated web crawlers to scan the internet. These crawlers find files and databases stored on many different web servers.

The crawlers collect this data to build a massive list called an index. This index is updated all the time so it stays current. When you ask a question, the engine looks through this index very quickly. It matches your words to the best information it can find. This process allows the engine to be both fast and accurate.

People have been dreaming of these systems for a long time. In 1945, a man named Vannevar Bush described a system called a memex. He thought people would need a way to find information in growing libraries. He even imagined connected notes, which are like the hyperlinks we use today. The first real internet search tools appeared in the early 1990s. One of the first was Archie, created by Alan Emtage in 1990. Archie searched for file names on public servers rather than web pages. Later, tools like WebCrawler allowed people to search for any word on a page.

Many different companies have tried to make the best search engine. In the 1990s, engines like Yahoo!, AltaVista, and Lycos were very popular. Google arrived in 1998 and changed how everything worked. It used a special system called PageRank to organize results. PageRank looks at how many other pages link to a specific website. If many good sites link to a page, that page ranks higher. By May 2025, Google held about 89% to 90% of the worldwide search share. Other engines like Bing and Yandex still have users, but they are much smaller.

Search engines are a big part of our daily lives now. They connect us to almost any topic we can imagine. When you want to learn about a new hobby, you use one. If you need to find a video, a search engine helps. They have turned the vast web into a place that is easy to explore. Even though the technology changes, the goal stays the same. We use these tools to turn a huge amount of data into useful knowledge.
