A web application is a special kind of software. It runs inside a web browser instead of being installed on your computer.

These apps use web technologies to work. In the past, web pages were mostly static. This means they did not change much when you clicked them. Web applications changed this by letting a server build a new response for every request. This makes the experience feel much more active. You do not need to manage software installations on your own machine. This makes it easy to use the same app on different devices.

Most web applications use a three-tier system to communicate.

The first part is called the presentation tier. This is the web browser that you see and touch. The second part is the application tier. This uses an engine to handle tasks using code like Python or Ruby on Rails. The third part is the storage tier. This is a database that holds all the important information. When you use the app, the browser sends a request to the engine. The engine then talks to the database to find what you need. It then sends the information back to your screen.

People have been building these tools for a long time. The idea of a web application was first introduced in 1999. This happened through the Java language in the Servlet Specification version 2.2.

In 1995, Netscape introduced JavaScript. This allowed programmers to add moving parts to a page. By the early 2000s, sites like Gmail and Google Maps made the web more interactive. In 2005, a method called Ajax became popular. This allowed a script to get data without downloading a whole new page. Later, developers began using web APIs and JSON to make things even faster.

There are many ways to build these apps today. Some are called Single-page applications, or SPAs. Others are Progressive web apps, known as PWAs.

The term PWA was created in 2015 by Frances Berriman and Alex Russell. These apps can feel like the apps you download from an app store. They can even work offline or run without a URL. Many apps are hosted on remote cloud services. This lets people use software on low-power computers. Developers can also use a web application framework to build things faster. These frameworks handle common tasks so teams can focus on new ideas.

Even though they are helpful, web applications have risks. Developers must be very careful about security.

They have to protect private customer data and company information. They use special steps like authentication to keep things safe. This means checking that a user is who they say they are. They also use logging and auditing to keep track of what happens. Using a framework can help, but building security in from the start is often better. If a developer does this well, the app stays safe and helpful for everyone.
