Waxwing

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Waxwings are beautiful birds with soft feathers. They have a crest on their heads. They also have a black stripe near their eyes. Their wings have red tips. These tips look like sealing wax. This is how they got their name.

There are three kinds of waxwings. They are the Bohemian, the Japanese, and the cedar waxwing. These birds eat different things at different times. In the summer, they eat insects. They catch bugs in the air or from leaves. In the winter, they eat fruit. They love juicy berries like rowan berries.

Waxwings do not fly the same way as other birds. They are not long-distance migrants. Instead, they wander to find food. If there is not enough fruit, huge flocks can move to new places. These flocks can have thousands of birds!

Both parents help raise the babies. The female builds a nest in a tree. She uses twigs, grass, and moss. The male brings her food while she sits on the eggs. Once the eggs hatch, both birds feed the young ones.
