They belong to a group called Cerylinae. These birds are experts at catching fish. Many other kingfishers eat many different things. But these birds are specialists. This means they focus on eating fish. They are very good at this hard job.

How do these birds live? They belong to three different groups called genera. The first group is Megaceryle. It has four species in it. One is the giant kingfisher. Another is the crested kingfisher. Then there is the belted kingfisher. The last one is the ringed kingfisher.

Each group has its own way of living.

Scientists have studied how these birds moved. They used molecular phylogenetic studies to find out. This is a way to look at tiny parts of a bird to see its history. These studies suggest the birds started in Asia. They moved to the Americas two times. The first trip happened around 8 million years ago. The Chloroceryle group made that trip. The second trip was around 1.9 million years ago. The Megaceryle group moved then.

There are nine species in the Cerylinae group.

The genus Ceryle has the pied kingfisher. It lives in warm areas of the Old World. It can be found as far north as Turkey and China. The Chloroceryle group has four green kingfishers. They live in tropical America. These are the Amazon, green, green-and-rufous, and American pygmy kingfishers. The Megaceryle group has a wide home. The giant and crested kingfishers live in Africa, Asia, and America. The belted kingfisher is common in North America. The ringed kingfisher lives in Texas and Arizona.

These birds connect to the world we see. You might see a belted kingfisher near a river. It is the only one that is widespread in North America. You can see how they fit into the history of our planet. They traveled across the world a long time ago. They moved from Asia to the New World. This shows how living things spread out over millions of years. It is a long story of travel and survival.
