life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

River kingfishers are a special group of bright birds. They belong to a subfamily called Alcedininae. These birds are often compact with large heads and short tails. They also have long, pointed bills for finding food. Most of these birds live in warm places. They are found throughout Africa and parts of Asia. Some even live as far away as Australia.

Only the common kingfisher lives in Europe and northern Asia.

These birds have a very interesting way of living. Many of them dive into the water to catch fish. To do this, they sit upright on a perch. They might even hover in the air for a moment. The color of their bill tells us what they eat. Species that eat insects usually have red bills. Fish-eaters often have black bills.

Small species like the Oriental dwarf kingfisher also eat spiders and frogs.

Scientists have spent a long time studying these birds. In 2007, a molecular phylogenetic study changed how we group them. This study looked at their DNA to see how they are related. Before this, the groups were not considered monophyletic. That means they did not all come from one single ancestor. Now, the species are sorted into four different genera.

One group is called Corythornis and another is called Ceyx.

There are 35 different species in this subfamily. The Ceyx group includes many small birds like the little kingfisher. Most birds in the Ceyx group have only three toes. However, the Sulawesi dwarf kingfisher still has a tiny fourth toe.

These birds often live in wet rainforests or woodlands. The Alcedo group prefers to live near fresh water. They might live in open areas or deep in the forest.

When it is time to have babies, they work as a team. A pair of birds will dig a burrow in a dirt bank. They lay white eggs on the bare ground inside. Both the mother and father help keep the eggs warm. They also both bring food to the hungry chicks.
