Wassily Leontief was a famous economist. He was born in 1905. He studied how different parts of an economy work together. He created a way called input-output analysis. This method shows how one industry helps another. For example, it shows how parts from one factory make goods for another.

Leontief lived in many places. He was born in Germany. He studied in Russia and Germany. Later, he moved to the United States. He worked at Harvard University for a long time. He also taught at New York University. In 1949, he used a very early computer. This computer helped him study 500 parts of the U.S. economy. This was one of the first big uses for computers in math.

He found a strange fact about trade. He called it the Leontief paradox. It showed that U.S. trade was different than people thought. For his great work, he won the Nobel Prize in 1973. This is a very big prize for smart people. He also liked fly fishing and ballet. He died in 1999 at age 93.
