He was born in 1902 on a farm in South Dakota. His father wanted him to work on the farm. Because of this, Schultz had to work hard to go to school. He later earned a degree in agriculture and economics. He also studied at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

Schultz became a teacher and a leader at the University of Chicago. He studied why some countries grew fast after a big war. He found that healthy and smart people helped a country recover. He called this "human capital." This means that skills and knowledge are like valuable tools. He said people should invest in their own health and learning.

Schultz also visited poor farming towns in Europe. He did not want to just send food or money. He thought that giving new tools and better schooling was better. This would help farmers grow more and stay strong. In 1979, he won the Nobel Prize in Economics. This is a very big honor for his work.
