It serves as a significant administrative and historical region within the country. The county is bordered by several other English counties. To the north, it meets Staffordshire and Leicestershire. The eastern border is shared with Northamptonshire. To the south, it sits next to Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire. The western boundary is formed by Worcestershire and the West Midlands.

While it was once much larger, modern boundaries have changed significantly.

The geography of Warwickshire is characterized by varied landscapes. Most of the county consists of flat, lowland areas. The northern section features mildly undulating countryside. This area rises to a height of 178 metres near Hartshill. In the far south, the landscape includes a small part of the Cotswolds. This area is a designated national landscape.

The highest point in the entire county is Ebrington Hill. This peak is located at the southwest extremity on the Gloucestershire border. It reaches an elevation of 241 metres. The River Avon, a major tributary of the Severn, flows through the southern part of the region.

Historically, the county has been shaped by forests and ancient roads. Much of western Warwickshire was once covered by the ancient Forest of Arden. Most of this forest was eventually cut down to provide fuel for industrialisation. Because of this history, many local place names end with "-in-Arden." The remaining area was known as the Felden. This area is now an agricultural landscape through which the River Avon and River Leam flow. During the Roman period, the road known as Watling Street acted as a boundary. It separated the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia from the Danelaw.

The history of the region includes many famous figures and events. The playwright William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564. He lived much of his life in that town. In 1605, the Gunpowder Plot was planned near the village of Snitterfield. During the Middle Ages, the city of Coventry was a vital centre for the textile trade. The county also saw action during the English Civil War. The Battle of Edgehill took place within its borders.

These events helped shape the cultural identity of the area.

Warwickshire's population is concentrated mainly in the north and centre. The county has undergone major administrative changes since 1974. Previously, the city of Coventry and the city of Birmingham were part of Warwickshire. Now, they are separate metropolitan authorities.

According to the 2021 United Kingdom census, Nuneaton is the largest town with 88,815 residents. Rugby follows with a population of 78,120. Other significant towns include Leamington Spa, with 51,310 people, and Warwick, with 36,680. Bedworth and Stratford-upon-Avon also maintain large populations. The southern part of the county remains much more rural and sparsely populated.

The economy of Warwickshire is currently transitioning between different industries. During the Industrial Revolution, the Warwickshire coalfield was heavily exploited. This led to the growth of manufacturing in Coventry and the western areas. Major industries once included coal mining, textiles, engineering, and cement production. Today, heavy industry is in decline. It is being replaced by service sectors and distribution centres. The automotive industry is now a major economic contributor.

Companies like Jaguar Land Rover and Aston Martin Lagonda have major operations here.

Warwickshire is also becoming a global hub for modern technology. The region is gaining a reputation in the video game industry. This area is often referred to as "Silicon Spa." It includes Southam, Royal Leamington Spa, and Warwick. Dozens of game studios operate here, employing over 2,000 highly skilled people. This accounts for more than 10% of the UK's games development workforce. Additionally, the region is growing in battery technology. A £130 million UK Battery Industrialisation Centre is based in Coventry. Tourism also supports the economy, generating over £1 billion in turnover.
