The Wannsee Conference was a high-level meeting of Nazi Germany officials.

It took place on January 20, 1942. The meeting occurred at a villa in the Berlin suburb of Wannsee.

The purpose was to coordinate the implementation of the "Final Solution to the Jewish Question." This was a plan to deport and murder most Jewish people in German-occupied Europe.

The meeting ensured that various government departments would cooperate with the SS. This coordination was vital for the scale of the planned crimes.

Reinhard Heydrich called the meeting. He was an SS-Obergruppenführer and director of the Reich Security Main Office.

Heydrich explained how European Jews would be rounded up. They were to be sent to extermination camps in the General Government. The General Government was the occupied part of Poland. At the meeting, Heydrich stated that the fate of the deportees would become an internal SS matter. He also sought to establish a clear definition of who was considered Jewish.

Nazi discrimination against Jewish people began in January 1933. The regime used violence and economic pressure to force people to leave. Laws like the Law for the Restoration of the Professional Civil Service excluded Jews from many jobs.

In September 1935, the Nuremberg Laws were enacted. These laws stripped Jews of their German citizenship. They also prohibited marriages between Jews and people of Germanic extraction. By 1939, many Jewish people had immigrated to countries like the United States or Great Britain.

After the invasion of Poland in 1939, mass murders began. Special task forces called Einsatzgruppen performed these killings.

They were supported by paramilitary groups and members of the German police. In July 1941, Hermann Göring gave Heydrich written authorization to plan a "total solution."

This authorization included coordinating all involved government organizations. The Nazis also used the Hunger Plan to cause mass starvation. This plan aimed to divert food to the German army and civilians. Historian Timothy Snyder notes that 4.2 million Soviet citizens were starved because of this.

The conference was originally planned for December 1941.

However, the situation in the war changed. The Red Army began a counter-offensive near Moscow in December 1941. Germany also declared war on the United States. Because of these shifts, Heydrich postponed the meeting to January 1942. During this time, Hitler decided that the extermination of Jews should happen immediately. This changed the original plan of deporting people to Siberia for labor.

Many different government representatives attended the rescheduled meeting.

Participants included state secretaries from the Foreign Office and the justice ministry. Representatives from the interior and state ministries were also present.

Even officials from the occupied territories in Poland attended. This broad attendance showed how the plan involved the entire state structure. The goal was to prevent any department from interfering with the SS.

We know the details of this meeting because of the Wannsee Protocol.

This document contains the minutes of the conference. Robert Kempner found a copy in March 1947. He discovered it among files seized from the German Foreign Office. The Protocol was used as evidence during the Nuremberg trials. Today, the Wannsee House serves as a Holocaust memorial. It stands as a reminder of the administrative planning behind these crimes.
