He held several powerful positions that allowed him to influence many parts of the government. Many historians describe him as one of the most sinister figures in the Nazi regime. Adolf Hitler even referred to him as "the man with the iron heart." Heydrich was a principal architect of the Holocaust. This was the systematic deportation and genocide of all Jewish people in German-occupied Europe.

Heydrich managed several massive organizations to enforce Nazi control. Starting in September 1939, he served as the chief of the Reich Security Main Office. This office included the Gestapo, the Kripo, and the SD. The SD, or Sicherheitsdienst, was an intelligence organization. Its specific job was to find and neutralize resistance to the Nazi Party. It used arrests, deportations, and murders to achieve this goal. He also served as the Deputy Reich-Protector of Bohemia and Moravia.

In January 1942, Heydrich chaired the Wannsee Conference. This meeting was used to formalize the "Final Solution to the Jewish question." This plan involved the mass deportation and murder of Jewish populations. Heydrich was also directly responsible for the Einsatzgruppen. These were special task forces that traveled behind German armies. They murdered more than two million people through mass shootings and gassing. This total included 1.3 million Jewish people.

Heydrich was born on March 7, 1904, in Halle an der Saale. His father, Richard Bruno Heydrich, was a composer and opera singer. His mother was Elisabeth Anna Maria Amalia Heydrich. Music was a central part of his childhood. He began learning the piano and violin when he was only six years old. He was also a talented athlete. He excelled at swimming and fencing. During his youth, he was often bullied due to a high-pitched voice and rumors about his ancestry.

After World War I, Heydrich's family faced financial difficulties. This was caused by Germany's large war debt and hyperinflation. In 1922, he joined the German Navy, known as the Reichsmarine. He trained as a naval cadet at Kiel. He eventually became a signals officer on the battleship SMS Schleswig-Holstein. However, his naval career ended in April 1931. He was dismissed by Admiral Erich Raeder for conduct deemed unbecoming of an officer. Shortly after, he joined the Nazi Party and the SS.

Heydrich rose to power quickly within the SS intelligence service. Heinrich Himmler hired him to develop a new intelligence system. Heydrich created a vast network of spies and informers. He used this information to gather intelligence and for political blackmail. He kept detailed records on thousands of people using index cards. His income grew significantly as his influence increased. By 1938, his annual income had risen to 17,371 Reichsmarks.

His life ended as a result of Operation Anthropoid. On May 27, 1942, a team of Czech and Slovak soldiers ambushed him in Prague. These soldiers had been trained by the British Special Operations Executive. The ambush left Heydrich mortally wounded. He died from sepsis on June 4, 1942.

In response, Nazi intelligence falsely blamed local resistance for the attack. They destroyed the villages of Lidice and Ležáky. In Lidice, the men and boys aged 14 and older were shot. Most women and children were deported to concentration camps where they were murdered.
