The "Final Solution to the Jewish Question" was the official Nazi code name for a plan of genocide. This plan aimed to murder all Jewish people within the reach of Nazi Germany. It was a systematic and deliberate policy carried out during World War II. The term was a euphemism, which is a mild word used to hide a harsh reality. Nazi leaders used such language to communicate about mass murder without using direct terms. This secret program resulted in the Holocaust, a period of immense loss and tragedy.

Historians believe this plan was not the result of a single decision. Instead, the decision-making process was prolonged and incremental over many months. In the early years, before the war, the Nazi government focused on different methods. They used intimidation and took away money and property from Jewish citizens. They also tried to encourage Jewish people to emigrate from Germany. One idea was the Madagascar Plan, which aimed to move Jewish populations to a French colony. However, an Allied naval blockade made this plan impossible to complete.

As the war progressed, the Nazi goals shifted from expulsion to total eradication. This shift coincided with the launch of Operation Barbarossa in June 1941. This was the German invasion of the Soviet Union. During this time, the Nazi leadership decided to pursue a plan to kill rather than move Jewish people. Heinrich Himmler, the Reichsführer-SS, became the chief architect of this new plan. On July 31, 1941, Hermann Göring authorized Reinhard Heydrich to prepare for a "total solution." Heydrich was tasked with coordinating all affected government organizations to implement this goal.

The genocide was carried out through two major, distinct operations. The first phase involved mobile killing units called the Einsatzgruppen. These units, along with Order Police battalions, moved across occupied eastern territories. They followed the German army to find and murder Jewish civilians. In July 1941, Himmler ordered that any Jew behind the frontier be treated as a partisan. This allowed the SS and police to carry out mass shootings of men, women, and children. For example, over 33,000 people were killed in a single massacre at Babi Yar near Kyiv.

The second phase was a more complex and centralized system of murder. Instead of the killers moving to the victims, the victims were brought to the killers. Jewish people from central and western Europe were sent on death trains to specific locations. These locations were centralized extermination camps built for systematic murder. Camps such as Auschwitz II Birkenau and Treblinka were fitted with permanent gas chambers. These facilities allowed the Nazis to murder large numbers of people in a very short time. The use of Zyklon B, a lethal gas, was authorized for the SS to use in these settings.

In January 1942, Nazi officials met to formalize these plans at the Wannsee Conference. This meeting took place at a villa near Berlin and was chaired by Heydrich. Fifteen senior officials attended to ensure different government agencies cooperated. Heydrich estimated that approximately 11,000,000 Jews in Europe would be targeted by this plan. This number included people in Axis-controlled areas and neutral nations like Switzerland or Sweden. The meeting helped ensure the smooth flow of deportations to the death camps.

The scale of the Holocaust was massive and devastating. The genocide resulted in the murder of two-thirds of the entire Jewish population of Europe. In Poland, the impact was even more severe, with 90% of Polish Jews murdered. These events are documented through vast amounts of captured German records. This includes the Wannsee Conference Protocol and thousands of tons of other archival documents. These records provided the evidence needed during the Nuremberg Trials to prove the systematic nature of the crime.
