Wallcreeper

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The wallcreeper is a special bird found in high mountains. These mountains stretch from southern Europe all the way to central China. This bird is very unique in the animal world. It is the only living member of its own family, Tichodromidae. It is also the only member of its genus, Tichodroma. Scientists call it a passerine, which is a type of songbird.

This bird has a very interesting way of moving. It feeds on insects and spiders found on rock faces. To find food, it moves across cliffs with short flights. It also uses quick hops along the stone. Sometimes, it will even chase flying insects from a perch. It often moves with its wings partially spread. This helps it navigate the steep mountain walls.

Experts have studied this bird for a long time. Carl Linnaeus first included it in the treecreeper group in 1766. Later, Johann Karl Wilhelm Illiger gave it its own genus in 1811. Karel Voous later placed it in its own family. A study in 2016 showed it is a sister species to the nuthatch family. We even know of an old relative from the fossil record. This bird is called Tichodroma capeki from the Late Miocene.

Wallcreepers have very striking colors. Their bodies are mostly blue-grey with darker feathers on the tail. The most amazing part is their crimson wings with white spots. These bright colors are usually hidden when the wings are folded. In summer, males have a black throat. Females may have a white throat or a dark patch. The Asian subspecies, T. m. nepalensis, is slightly darker than others.

Building a home is a big job for these birds. The female builds a cup nest using grass and moss. She hides the nest deep in a rock crevice or cave. She lines it with soft things like feathers or wool. She usually lays four or five white eggs with dark speckles. The female sits on them for about 20 days. Both parents work together to feed the helpless babies.
