Wallcreeper

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The wallcreeper is a small bird. It lives in high mountains. These mountains go from Europe to China.

This bird has blue-grey feathers. Its most famous part is its wings. The wings are bright red with white spots. You only see them when the bird moves.

Wallcreepers eat insects and spiders. They find food on rock walls. They use short flights and quick hops to move. They may even chase flying bugs from a perch.

In the summer, birds make nests in rock holes. The female builds a cup nest. She uses grass and moss. She often adds soft feathers or wool.

She lays four or five white eggs. The eggs have small dark spots. The female sits on the eggs for about 20 days. The male brings her food while she waits. When the babies hatch, they are helpless. They have no feathers and cannot see. Both parents feed the young for about 30 days.
