Accentor

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Accentors are a group of small birds.

They belong to the genus Prunella. Most live in the mountains of Europe and Asia. Some live in low areas too. The Siberian accentor flies very far. It travels 3,000 to 5,000 km to reach China and Korea.

These birds are 14 to 18 cm long. They weigh between 25 and 35 g. They look a bit like sparrows. But accentors have thin, sharp bills. They use these bills to eat insects in summer. In winter, they eat berries and small seeds. They may swallow grit or sand. This helps their stomachs break up seeds.

Most accentors live in flocks. One bird called the dunnock likes to be alone.

Male accentors sing to find a mate. In most species, both parents help build the nest. They make neat cup nests. They lay 3 to 6 green or blue eggs. The eggs stay in the nest for 12 days. Both parents feed the young birds. The babies leave the nest after 12 more days.
