This term is used to criticize how businesses treat workers. It describes a situation where workers have very little choice. They might have low pay or poor working conditions. They may also have no way to move up in their jobs.

People have talked about this for a long time. In ancient Rome, a writer named Cicero spoke about it. Later, during the Industrial Revolution, thinkers like Karl Marx used the term.

They argued that workers did not have enough power. In the 1800s, some people in the United States used this term to argue about fairness. Some people who defended slavery even used it to claim that Northern workers were not truly free.

Many activists worked to change these things. They wanted workers to have more control. Some groups wanted workers to own the businesses they worked in.
