Serfdom was a way of life for many people in the past.

Serfs lived on land owned by a powerful lord. They worked in fields, forests, and mines. In return, the lord gave them protection and land to grow food.

This was a hard life. Serfs could not leave the land without permission. Their children were also born as serfs. This kept the system going for a long time.

Serfdom was different from slavery. A lord could not sell a serf by himself. However, a lord could sell land along with the serfs on it. In some places, like Russia, serfdom became very much like slavery.

Over time, things began to change. In Western Europe, the Black Death plague changed how society worked. Later, many countries ended serfdom. Prussia ended it in 1807. Russia ended it in 1861.

These changes helped people gain more freedom. Even today, we study these laws to learn about history.
