Another name is Krishna Dvaipayana. This refers to his dark skin and his birthplace on an island. Many Hindus believe he is a partial incarnation of the god Vishnu. They also call him one of the Chiranjivis. This means they believe he is immortal and still lives today. He lived during a time called the Dvapara Yuga.

Vyasa is famous for how he organized holy knowledge. He is said to have taken the single, eternal Veda and divided it. This act created four separate books: the Rigveda, Samaveda, Yajurveda, and Atharvaveda.

This division helped people understand the divine wisdom. By splitting the texts, he made the knowledge easier to study. This is why his name means "the splitter" or "the divider." His work helped create the foundation for many religious studies.

He is also the author of the Mahabharata. This is a major epic in Hindu literature.

The story is very long and complex. Some stories say he told the epic to Ganesha. Ganesha acted as his scribe while he spoke. Vyasa is also a character within the story itself. He is a wise guide for the royal Kuru family. He even helped the many children of Queen Gandhari. He used his knowledge to help them grow safely.

Vyasa's life is tied to the history of the Kuru kingdom. He was the father of several important people in the epic. He fathered the kings who led the great family struggle.

He served as a moral guide for both sides of the war. He offered advice to King Dhritarashtra and the Pandava brothers. He even helped with important royal ceremonies. His wisdom was often asked for in the royal courts. He worked to prevent conflict when things became difficult.

Beyond the epic, Vyasa wrote many other important texts. He is credited with writing the eighteen major Puranas. These books cover a huge range of different topics. He also wrote the Brahma Sutras.
