It is a handmade book called a codex. The pages are made of vellum, which is thin animal skin. Scientists used carbon dating to find its age. They found the skin was made between 1404 and 1438.

The book works in a very unusual way. It contains about 240 pages, though some are missing. Many pages have foldouts that show larger diagrams. The text is written from left to right. Most of the writing uses a single column on each page. Some pages even have stars in the left margin. The words follow certain patterns, almost like a real language. Some letters only appear at the start of a word. Other letters only appear in the middle or at the end. This makes the text feel very organized.

The history of the book involves many different owners. The first known owner was Georg Baresch. He was an alchemist from Prague in the 17th century. Later, the book was owned by the Collegio Romano. It eventually came to a man named Wilfrid Voynich. He was a Polish book dealer who bought it in 1912.

Since 1969, the manuscript has been kept at Yale University. You can even look at the whole book online through their library. It has traveled through many hands over hundreds of years.

There are many specific facts about how the book was made. The pages are made from at least fourteen or fifteen calfskins. The writers used a quill pen and iron gall ink. They also used colorful paints like blue, white, red-brown, and green. The blue paint was made from a mineral called azurite. The white paint likely used egg whites and calcium carbonate.
