A vizier is a high-ranking political advisor or minister. This role has existed for a long time in many lands. Historically, they served in countries known as "greater Persia."

They act as important helpers to rulers. A vizier might be a single leader or part of a group. This group is often called a cabinet. One leader in this group might be a Grand Vizier. The Grand Vizier acts like a prime minister for a whole government.

How a vizier works depends on their specific job. In the 11th century, a thinker named al-Mawardi described two main types. The first type was the wazīr al-tanfīdh, or "vizier of execution." These leaders had limited power and simply carried out the ruler's plans. The second type was the wazīr al-tafwīd, or "vizier with delegated powers." These were much more powerful leaders. They had authority over both civil and military affairs. They held almost the same powers as the ruler themselves.

The history of the word is very interesting. Many people believe it comes from the Arabic word wazara. This root means to bear a burden. In the Quran, Aaron is called a wazir, which means a helper to Moses.

Some people thought the word came from an Iranian root. They believed it meant a judge or a command. However, many historians disagree with this idea. They say the title grew naturally from the idea of a personal helper in early Islamic history.

Different empires used the title in unique ways. In the Ottoman Empire, the Grand Vizier was second only to the Sultan. They led the Imperial Council, which was called the Divan.

In the Umayyad Caliphs of Córdoba, there were many viziers at once. In the year 1008, there were as many as 29 viziers! In the Maldives, the top leader was the Bodu Vizier. Even in the game of chess, a piece is called a vizier.

Today, the word still connects to how governments work. In many Arabic-speaking lands, it is the standard word for a minister. In Egypt, the Prime Minister is called a wazīr. In Pakistan, the title Vazīr-e Azam is used for the Prime Minister.
