He is widely regarded as one of the greatest batters in the history of the sport. Richards represented the West Indies cricket team from 1974 until 1991. During this time, he often batted at number three in a very dominant West Indies squad. He played a vital role in winning the 1975 and 1979 Cricket World Cups. He also helped his team reach the finals of the 1983 Cricket World Cup. His career is defined by incredible scoring ability and a fierce will to win.

Richards began his journey in St. John's, Antigua. His brothers, Mervyn and Donald, were amateur cricketers who encouraged him to play. He practiced the game with his father and a family friend, Pat Evanson. After leaving school at age 18, he worked at D'Arcy's Bar and Restaurant. The owner, D'Arcy Williams, supported his talent by providing new cricket whites, gloves, pads, and a bat. Richards later moved to the United Kingdom to pursue professional cricket. He initially played league cricket for Lansdown C.C. in Bath. While there, he worked as an assistant groundsman to help earn money. He also learned much from a player named "Shandy" Perera, who influenced his post-game analysis.

His professional career in England began with Somerset County Cricket Club in 1974.

He made his debut against Glamorgan and was named Man of the Match. Richards eventually became a massive star for both Somerset and the West Indies. In 1976, he set a remarkable world record by scoring 1,710 runs in a single calendar year. This record stood for 30 years until 2006. He also achieved the rare feat of scoring a century and taking five wickets in a single One Day International against New Zealand. Even after undergoing eye surgery for a pterygium in 1984, he remained a world-class player for several more years.

Richards's statistics reflect his incredible dominance on the field. He scored 8,540 runs in 121 Test matches with an average of 50.23. During his best years between 1976 and 1983, his Test average was a staggering 66.51. He also scored nearly 7,000 runs in One Day Internationals. In first-class cricket, he accumulated more than 36,000 runs. He was the first West Indies player to reach 100 first-class centuries, finishing his career with 114.

These numbers place him among the most productive batters to ever play.

As a captain, Richards led the West Indies in 50 Test matches. He is the only West Indies captain who never lost a Test series. He won 27 of those matches and lost only 8. His leadership style was intense and driven by a desire to win. This sometimes led to controversy, such as an aggressive "finger-flapping" appeal in 1990. However, his ability to inspire his team was undeniable. He also showed great character by refusing to play for a rebel West Indies squad in South Africa during the Apartheid era in 1983 and 1984.

Many experts have recognized his impact on the game through various honors. In 1999, he was knighted for his contributions to cricket. In 2000, a panel of experts voted him one of the five Cricketers of the Century. Wisden later named him the greatest One Day International batsman of his era. He was also inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2009. In 2013, Wisden selected him as number five in their list of the best Test teams from the last 150 years. He was one of only two players from the post-war era included in that selection.

Today, the legacy of Sir Viv Richards is preserved in many ways.
