Kapil Dev is a legendary figure in the history of international cricket. He was a premier all-rounder for the Indian national team. This means he excelled at two distinct disciplines: bowling and batting. As a fast-medium bowler, he used pace and movement to challenge batsmen. As a middle-order batsman, he was known for his hard-hitting style.

He remains the only player in Test cricket history to achieve a specific double. He took more than 400 wickets and scored over 5,000 runs. This rare combination of skills defined his career.

Dev's technical skills were diverse and highly effective. As a bowler, he utilized a trademark outswinger to move the ball in the air. He also used bouncers to test the reflexes of his opponents. His bowling often required great physical endurance and strength. In one famous instance against Australia, he played through a groin injury. He used pain-killing injections to continue competing on the final day. This determination helped him secure a vital five-wicket haul.

His batting was equally impactful during high-pressure moments. He was a powerful hitter who could change the course of a game quickly. In One Day Internationals (ODIs), he held a long-standing record for the highest individual score by a lower-order batsman. He scored 175 not out while batting at number five or lower. This record stood until 2023 when it was surpassed by Glenn Maxwell. His ability to score runs rapidly made him a constant threat to opposing teams.

Dev's journey began in Chandigarh, India, where he was born in 1959. His family moved to the city following the partition of India and Pakistan. He began his domestic career playing for Haryana in 1975. He made an immediate impact by taking six wickets in his debut match. He later led Haryana to their first Ranji Trophy championship in the 1990–91 season. In that final, he scored 141 runs and took three wickets against Bombay. This victory was a major milestone for his home state team.

His international career reached a peak during the 1983 Cricket World Cup. Dev was appointed captain of the Indian team during this period. He led India to a historic victory against the West Indies. This win made him the first Indian captain to ever lift the World Cup trophy. At age 24, he also became the youngest captain in history to win a World Cup.

This achievement fundamentally changed the status of cricket in India.

Throughout his career, Dev achieved numerous statistical milestones. He was the first player to take 200 ODI wickets. In Test cricket, he held the world record for the most wickets taken. This record was eventually broken by Courtney Walsh in the year 2000. He also became the youngest Test player to reach the double of 1,000 runs and 100 wickets. These numbers highlight his consistent excellence across different formats of the game.
