He is widely seen as one of the greatest batters to ever play the game. Richards played for the West Indies team between 1974 and 1991. He was a key part of the teams that won the 1975 and 1979 Cricket World Cups. These wins were very special because they helped bring the Caribbean islands together. Learning the game started early for Richards in St. John's. His brothers, Mervyn and Donald, encouraged him to play cricket. He practiced with his father and a family friend named Pat Evanson. After leaving school at age 18, he worked at a restaurant. The owner, D'Arcy Williams, helped him by providing new cricket gear like gloves and a bat. Later, he moved to the United Kingdom to play for Somerset. There, he learned even more from a player named "Shandy" Perera.

Richards had a career filled with amazing records and big moments. In 1976, he had a spectacular year by scoring 1,710 runs in Test matches. This was a world record that lasted for 30 years. He also scored 8,540 runs in 121 Test matches during his career. In 1986, he became the only person to score a century and take five wickets in the same one-day match. He was also the first West Indies player to reach 100 first-class centuries. His skill helped him become a star in both Test cricket and One Day Internationals.

As a captain, Richards was known for his fierce will to win. He led the West Indies in 50 Test matches. He is the only West Indies captain who never lost a Test series. While he was very successful, his leadership sometimes caused small arguments. One time, he used an aggressive gesture to appeal for a player's dismissal. Despite this, his talent was undeniable to everyone watching. He helped Somerset win several trophies, including the NatWest Trophy in 1983.
