His skill allowed him to help his team in almost every part of a match.

Playing cricket at a high level requires many different skills. Sobers began his career mainly as a bowler. A bowler is the player who throws the ball to the batsman. However, his coaches soon moved him up the batting order. This means he was asked to hit the ball more often. He used his talent to score huge numbers of runs. He also used his left-arm spin bowling to take many wickets. This variety made him a very hard player to beat.

Sobers was born on July 28, 1936, in Bridgetown, Barbados. He was the fifth of six children in his family. He showed a great love for many ball games early in life. This included cricket, football, and basketball. He and his brother Gerald were very talented at school. They helped their team win a cricket championship three years in a row. By age 13, he was already playing for local cricket clubs.

This was a world record for the highest score in a Test match. That record stood until 1994 when Brian Lara scored 375. Sobers played 93 Tests for the West Indies. He scored 8,032 runs and took 235 wickets. He also played 383 first-class matches during his long career.

Because of his great talent, Sobers received many honors. He was named the captain of the West Indies in 1965. He held this leadership role until 1972.
