He was a famous all-rounder, which means he was great at both batting and bowling. Most people remember him as one of the best fast bowlers in history. He was a master of a skill called swing. This is when a bowler makes the ball move through the air. Because he was so good at this, people called him the "Sultan of Swing."

He played many matches for his country, known as Test matches.

In a Test match, the bowler tries to get the batter out. Hadlee was very successful at this difficult job. In his 86 Test matches, he took 431 wickets. At that time, this was a world record. He was also the first bowler ever to pass 400 wickets. While he was bowling, he also scored many runs with his bat. He made 3,124 Test runs in total. This included two centuries, which are scores of 100 runs or more.

Cricket was a big part of the Hadlee family. Richard was born in Christchurch in 1951. His father, Walter Hadlee, played cricket for New Zealand. Two of his brothers, Dayle and Barry, also played for the national team. Even his former wife, Karen, played international cricket for New Zealand.

This shows how much his family loved the sport. He started his professional career for Canterbury in 1971. He made his first big Test match debut in 1973.

Many important moments happened during his long career. In 1978, he helped New Zealand win a historic match against England. In 1985, he helped his team win a series in Australia. He took 33 wickets in just three matches during that trip. In 1988, he traveled to India to break a world record. He became the first bowler to take 400 Test wickets there. In 1984, he was ranked as the number one bowler in the world. He kept that top ranking for four years until 1988.

Because he was so talented, he received many honors. He was made a Knight Bachelor in 1990. This means he is now called Sir Richard Hadlee. He was also put into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2009. A bronze bust of him stands outside the Christchurch Arts Centre.
