He grew up in a family deeply connected to sport. His father, Graeme, was a club cricketer, and his uncle, Greg Campbell, played Test cricket for Australia.

As a child, Ponting also played Australian Rules football for North Launceston. However, a severe injury at age 13 changed his life. He broke his humerus, the bone in his upper arm, during a match. The injury was so serious that the bone had to be pinned. This forced a 14-week recovery and ended his competitive football career.

His rise through the junior cricket ranks was remarkably fast. In 1986, while in the eighth grade, he scored four centuries in a single week. This incredible feat earned him a sponsorship from the manufacturer Kookaburra. By age 17, he made his first-class debut for Tasmania in the Sheffield Shield.

He became the youngest Tasmanian to play in a Sheffield Shield match. His talent was so evident that Academy coach Rod Marsh called him the best 17-year-old batsman he had ever seen. This early success paved the way for his international debut in 1995.

Throughout his career, Ponting reached many historic milestones. He is the only cricketer in history to be involved in 100 Test victories.

He finished his Test career with a batting average of 51.85.
