Many years ago, they moved into the Roman Empire. They wanted to find a safe place to live. They were running away from a group called the Huns.

In the year 378, the Goths fought a big battle. This was the Battle of Adrianople. The Goths won the fight. Later, a leader named Alaric I led them. He and his people even entered the city of Rome in 410.

The Goths eventually moved to southern Gaul. They later built a large kingdom in Spain and Portugal. They stayed there for two hundred years. During this time, they changed how they lived. King Reccared I helped them join with the local people. They even made a set of laws called the Visigothic Code. These laws helped Goths and Romans live as one group.
