A viral video is a video that becomes popular through a process of Internet sharing. People mostly share these videos on sites like YouTube. They also use social media and email to spread them.

These videos can be many things. Some are serious or make people feel deep emotions. Many are made for comedy or entertainment. Sometimes, a video shows an event caught by an eyewitness. For example, a tourist named Dave Budzinski filmed Battle at Kruger on a safari.

Sharing works by following social patterns and cultural practices. People see a video and decide to send it to others. This creates a chain reaction of views. A video might be a funny clip or a song. In 2012, the video Gangnam Style reached one billion views in just five months. It was the most viewed video on YouTube until Despacito arrived in 2017. One video called Kony 2012 was called the most viral in history. It gained 34 million views in three days and 100 million views in six days.

Videos were shared long before the Internet existed. People used word-of-mouth, film festivals, and VHS tapes. Even early cable TV helped videos spread. One very early example is Reefer Madness from 1936. Keith Stroup shared prints of this film at college festivals in the 1970s. Another famous story involved an exploding whale in Portland, Oregon. This happened in November 1970 during a news report. The story became an urban legend and was shared on bulletin board systems around 1994.

In the early days of the Internet, videos spread in different ways. Small animated GIFs were sent through email or dial-up access. Some videos were even found on game discs. The video The Spirit of Christmas appeared in 1995 on VHS and the internet. It was also an AVI file on the Tiger Woods 99 PlayStation disc. Another famous video was the Dancing Baby from 1996. This 3D-rendered baby became a cultural icon. It appeared in commercials and the TV show Ally McBeal.

Today, new tools make it easy for videos to go viral. Apps like TikTok and Instagram are very important. TikTok uses an algorithm to show content to users. An algorithm is a set of rules a computer uses to pick what you see. This helps people find new dances or sounds very quickly. People also look for buzz to see if a video is viral. Buzz is when many people talk about a video online or offline. The more buzz a video gets, the more views it will likely have.
