Violin Concerto (Mendelssohn)

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Felix Mendelssohn wrote a famous piece for the violin. It is called his Violin Concerto in E minor. He began working on it in 1838. It took six years to finish. He worked closely with his friend, Ferdinand David. David was a great violinist. This helped Mendelssohn make the music even better.

The music has three parts, or movements. The first part is fast. Usually, an orchestra plays first. But here, the violin starts almost right away. The second part is slow and calm. The third part is very lively. It even starts with a trumpet fanfare.

Mendelssohn did something new with the parts. He did not leave a break between them. The music flows from one part to the next. This was a big surprise to people back then. He also wrote out the cadenza. A cadenza is a part where the soloist shows off their skill. Most players used to make these up as they went. Mendelssohn wrote the notes down for them. This piece is still very hard to play. Many violinists study it to show they are masters.
