It is written for a solo cello and an orchestra. The orchestra has many parts. These include flutes, oboes, and trumpets. It also has strings and drums. The music has four parts. It lasts for almost 30 minutes.

The first time it was played, it was a disaster. The musicians did not have enough time to practice. Because of this, the show did not go well. At first, many people thought the music was sad. Some even thought it was depressing. But people grew to love it over time. In the 1960s, a player named Jacqueline du Pré made a famous recording.
