A suite is a set of music pieces. These pieces were made for one player alone. Bach likely wrote them around the year 1720. Each suite has six parts. They start with a prelude. Then, they follow with different dances. These dances have names like the allemande or the gigue.

For a long time, people did not play them often. The music is very hard to play. It was also hard to read the old notes. A man named Pablo Casals helped make them famous. He found an old book of music in a shop. He was only 13 years old then. Later, he was the first to record all six suites.

Today, many musicians play this music. Some even play it on a different instrument. This instrument is called the viola da spalla. It is held on the shoulder like a violin. These suites are seen as great musical works.
