Violin Concerto (Sibelius)

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Jean Sibelius wrote a famous piece for a solo violin.

It is called his Violin Concerto. This is the only concerto he ever wrote. A concerto is a piece where one instrument plays with an orchestra.

The music is very hard to play. It needs a lot of skill. The first part has a long section for the soloist. This is called a cadenza. In this piece, the cadenza is a very big part of the music.

Sibelius first wrote it in 1904. The first performance was not a success. The music was too difficult for the player. Sibelius then made many changes. He made a new version in 1905. This new version is a bit shorter. Some parts, like the very start, stayed the same.

The music has three parts. The first part can sound dark and heroic. The second part is very lyrical and song-like. The third part is fast and bright. One writer called it a "polonaise for polar bears."

Today, many great players still perform both the old and new versions.
