At that time, Finland was under Russian rule. The music was a way to protest. It was a secret way to show pride. To hide from Russian laws, people used fake names. They called the music "Impromptu" or "Happy Feelings."

The music uses many instruments. There are woodwinds like flutes and oboes. There are brass instruments like trumpets and horns. There are also drums and strings. Most of the piece sounds wild and loud. It shows the struggles of the Finnish people.

Near the end, the music turns calm. This part is the Finlandia Hymn. Some people think it is an old folk song. But Sibelius made it himself. It is a very important song for Finland. People have even suggested it should be the national anthem. Today, some groups sing it with a choir.
