The music is divided into three parts called movements. The first movement is fast and intense. Instead of the orchestra playing first, the violin enters almost immediately. This was a very new idea at the time. The second movement is slow and lyrical. It sounds very calm and peaceful. The third movement is very lively and bright. It even begins with a loud trumpet fanfare.

Mendelssohn worked closely with his friend Ferdinand David. David was the concertmaster of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. Mendelssohn asked David for advice on how to write for the violin. This was a special way of working. He wrote many letters to David during the process. The concerto was first performed in Leipzig on March 13, 1845. Ferdinand David played the solo part in that first show.

Mendelssohn did several things that were very innovative. Usually, there is a break between musical movements. Mendelssohn connected his movements so they play one after another. He also wrote out the cadenza in full. A cadenza is a part where the soloist shows their talent. In the past, players would make these parts up as they went. Mendelssohn decided to write the exact notes down for them.

This piece has had a huge impact on other composers. Many people followed Mendelssohn's new ideas in their own music. For example, Tchaikovsky used a similar placement for his cadenza. The way the movements connect also influenced Liszt. The concerto has stayed popular for a very long time. In 1948, it was even on the first LP record released. It remains a major test for any aspiring violin player today.
