An architect named Andrea Palladio designed it. He started the work in 1567. The house sits on a hill near Vicenza. It was built for a man named Paolo Almerico. The design was inspired by the Pantheon in Rome.

The house is shaped like a square. It has four front porches. These porches use tall Ionic columns. Each porch has steps leading up to it.

The name La Rotonda comes from the middle room. This room is a large circle. It has a high, round roof called a dome.

Inside, the walls have many beautiful paintings. These are called frescoes. One room is the West Salon. It has religious paintings on the walls and ceiling.

The house was built to match the land around it. It lets in lots of sunlight. Many other buildings were inspired by this house. Some even look like it in England and the United States.
