It sits on a hill near the city of Vicenza. This building is a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture. It was built for a man named Paolo Almerico. He was a priest who had worked at the Vatican. The house is so special that it is a World Heritage Site. This means people work hard to protect it for the future.

The house has a very interesting shape. It is a square building with four identical porches. These porches are called porticos. Each portico has six tall Ionic columns. They also have decorations called pediments with statues of gods on them.

The design is perfectly symmetrical. This means both sides look the same. The house was built to let in lots of sunlight. To do this, the design was rotated 45 degrees. This helps every room catch the sun.

An architect named Andrea Palladio began the work in 1567. He was inspired by a famous building in Rome called the Pantheon. Palladio died in 1580 before the house was finished. A second architect named Vincenzo Scamozzi took over the job.

Scamozzi made a change to the central hall. He designed a lower dome with a hole at the top. This hole is called an oculus. The building was finally completed in the 1590s. The Capra brothers helped finish it after they owned it.

Inside, the house is even more wonderful. The most famous part is the central circular hall. This room is called the rotunda.

It has a high dome and a balcony. The walls are covered in beautiful paintings called frescoes. Artists like Alessandro and Giovanni Battista Maganza painted them. One room is called the West Salon. It has religious paintings on the ceiling. The paintings in the East Salon tell the story of Paolo Almerico.

Many other famous buildings around the world look like this villa.

In England, buildings like Chiswick House were inspired by it. In the United States, the design influenced Thomas Jefferson. He used similar ideas for his home, Monticello. Even the White House shows some of this influence. The villa also inspired the House of Palestine in Nablus. It is amazing how one house can change how people build all over the world.
