Moturi Vijaya Shanthi is a highly influential Indian actress, film producer, and politician. Her career in the film industry has spanned 40 years. During this time, she has acted in 200 feature films. While she is most famous for her work in Telugu cinema, she has also performed in Tamil, Hindi, Kannada, and Malayalam films. Because of her immense popularity and talent, fans often call her the "Lady Superstar" or the "Action Queen of Telugu Cinema."

Vijaya Shanthi is best known for her ability to balance strength with femininity. She often chose women-centric roles, which are stories that focus on the experiences and struggles of female characters. In the 1990 film Karthavyam, she played a tough police officer. This performance was a major turning point in her career. It earned her the National Film Award for Best Actress from the Government of India. This made her the third woman from Telugu cinema to receive this prestigious honor.

Her approach to action is quite unique and physically demanding. Unlike many actors, she often refused to use stunt doubles for dangerous scenes. She has performed risky stunts herself, including jumping from heights of 30 feet. This dedication to realism helped her achieve the status of a "hero" in the film industry. In the film Karthavyam, which had a budget of approximately 90 lakh rupees, her performance helped the movie gross over 7 crores in southern territories. This success allowed her to move away from purely glamorous roles toward more serious, character-driven work.

Vijaya Shanthi's career began very early in her life. She made her acting debut in 1980 at the age of 14 in the Tamil film Kallukkul Eeram. That same year, she entered Telugu cinema with the movie Kilaadi Krishnudu. By 1983, the film Pellichoopulu helped her gain recognition as a rising star. She eventually became one of the highest-paid actresses in India. During the 1990s, her pay was equal to famous male stars like Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan.

Her achievements are backed by many significant awards and records. She holds the record for the most "Industry Hits" for a heroine in the 100-year history of Telugu cinema. Five of her films became the top-grossing movies of their era. She has won four Nandi Awards for Best Actress from the Andhra Pradesh state government. Additionally, she has received seven Filmfare Awards South. In 2003, she was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award for her long-standing contributions to film.

Beyond the screen, Vijaya Shanthi has had a complex and active political career. She entered state politics in 1998 and served as a Member of Parliament in the 15th Lok Sabha. She represented the Medak constituency for the Telangana Rashtra Samithi. Over the years, she has been a member of several different political organizations, including the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Indian National Congress. She also played a key role in the movement for a separate Telangana State. Her political involvement often coincided with a decrease in her film appearances.

Even after a long break from acting, Vijaya Shanthi has returned to the cinema. She took a sabbatical from films for 13 years, but she made her comeback in the 2020 movie Sarileru Neekevvaru. For this re-entry film, she was reportedly paid four crores. Looking toward the future, she is scheduled to star in a new film called Arjun Son of Vyjayanthi on April 18, 2025. In this film, she will play a powerful police officer, continuing the type of role that defined her legendary career.
