She is widely regarded as one of the finest performers in the history of Hindi cinema. Many historians and fans consider her the first female superstar of Indian cinema. Her career spanned several decades and multiple languages, including Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi. Beyond her acting, she is a master of Bharata Natyam, a classical Indian dance form. Her influence on Indian culture remains significant through her art and her public service.

Her journey into the arts began with rigorous formal training in classical disciplines. She studied Bharata Natyam under the teacher Vazhuvoor Ramaiah Pillai. She also mastered Carnatic music, which is a system of South Indian classical music. To achieve this, she learned from several renowned experts, including M. S. Subbulakshmi and D. K. Pattammal. This deep foundation allowed her to perform her arangetram, a formal debut stage performance, at age 13. Her talent was evident early; at just seven years old, she performed classical dance for Pope Pius XII in Vatican City in 1940.

Vyjayanthimala's film career followed a path of linguistic and regional expansion. She debuted at age 16 in the 1949 Tamil film *Vaazhkai*. She followed this with the Telugu film *Jeevitham* in 1950, where she performed her own voice dubbing with help from her father. Her transition to Hindi cinema occurred with the 1951 film *Bahar*. To ensure she could dub her own voice in Hindi, she studied at the Hindi Prachar Sabha. This dedication to her craft helped her navigate the different linguistic requirements of the Indian film industry.

Her rise to national stardom was marked by several landmark films and unprecedented achievements. The 1954 romance *Nagin* became a massive blockbuster, establishing her as an iconic figure. In 1955, she appeared in the period drama *Devdas* as the character Chandramukhi. This role is often called her magnum opus, or her greatest work. For this performance, she won a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. However, she famously refused the award. She argued that her role was a leading one, equal to that of her co-star, Suchitra Sen.

Throughout the late 1950s and 1960s, she achieved several historic milestones in the film industry. In 1958, she earned nominations for both Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress for the films *Sadhna* and *Madhumati*. This made her the first performer in Filmfare history to receive dual nominations in acting categories in a single year. She also became the first multi-nominee across all categories. Her success continued with the 1961 crime drama *Gunga Jumna*, for which she won Best Actress, and the 1964 musical *Sangam*. She later starred in the historical drama *Amrapali* in 1966, based on the life of a royal courtesan.

Vyjayanthimala received several of India's highest civilian honors for her contributions to the arts. In 1968, the Government of India awarded her the Padma Shri, which is the fourth-highest civilian honor. After retiring from acting following the 1970 film *Ganwaar*, she focused on her classical dance. She was later honored with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, the highest Indian recognition for practicing artists. In February 2024, at the age of 90, she was awarded the Padma Vibhushan. This is the second-highest civilian honor granted by the Indian government.

Her life and career reflect a deep connection to her religious and cultural roots. She is a devout Vaishnava Hindu and a vegetarian. She grew up listening to devotional songs and holy chants. Before every public performance, she prays to Goddess Saraswati to seek blessings for her art. This spiritual connection was visible in 2024 when a video of her performing a Bharata Natyam recital at the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya went viral on social media.

Her career serves as a bridge between classical Indian traditions and the modern era of mass media cinema.
