Vetulicolia are a group of extinct marine animals. They lived a long time ago in the sea. Most scientists think they are stem chordates. Chordates are a large group of animals that includes us.

These animals had two main body parts. The front part was large and round. It had a mouth and five holes on each side. These holes may have been gills to help them breathe. The back part was a tail with seven segments.

Vetulicolians did not have legs, feelers, or eyes. They likely spent their time swimming in the water. They were not predators that hunted other animals. Instead, they probably ate tiny bits of food. Some think they were planktivores. This means they ate plankton, which are tiny living things in the water. Others think they were deposit feeders. These animals would swim near the seafloor to find food. Some fossils show they had a spiral-shaped gut. This helps us learn how they lived and ate.
