Vernon Louis Parrington was a man with many different talents. He was a famous writer and a scholar of history. He was also a coach for college football teams. Parrington was born in Aurora, Illinois, in 1871. His family later moved to Emporia, Kansas. He studied at the College of Emporia and Harvard University. He earned his B.A. from Harvard in 1893.

Parrington worked at several different colleges during his life. He taught at the College of Emporia and the University of Oklahoma. He also taught at the University of Washington in Seattle. At the University of Oklahoma, he did many jobs. He taught British literature and organized the English department. He also coached the football team and played on the baseball team. He even worked to make the campus look more beautiful.

In 1927, Parrington started a new way to study the United States. This was called the American studies movement. He shared his ideas in a large book with three volumes. The book is named Main Currents in American Thought. It tells the history of American writing from colonial times. This book won the Pulitzer Prize for History in 1928. It was very important to many historians for a long time.

Parrington's life had some difficult moments too. In 1908, he was fired from the University of Oklahoma. Some religious groups in the area were unhappy with him. They wanted certain teachers to leave the school. Some people said he was blamed for smoking cigarettes in public. After that, he moved to the University of Washington. There, he had a very successful career as a teacher.

Parrington died suddenly in England on June 16, 1929. His students and friends helped finish his third book volume. Today, many people still remember his big ideas. Two places are named to honor his memory. There is a Parrington Hall at the University of Washington. There is also a Parrington Oval at the University of Oklahoma. These names help keep his history alive for students.
