Designing a room was a big project for Panton. He did not just make one chair at a time. He liked to design entire environments. This means he made the furniture, the lights, and even the wall coverings. He used textiles and fabrics to change how a room felt. In the Astoria Hotel in Norway, he used special patterns on floors and ceilings.

This helped the large room feel cozy and unified. He even made the first inflatable seats out of clear plastic.

His journey into design started in Denmark. Panton studied architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen. He graduated in 1951. For two years, he worked for a famous architect named Arne Jacobsen.

After that, Panton traveled across Europe for three years. He met many new people in the design world. These trips helped him start his own design office. He soon became known for very unusual ideas. He even designed houses made of cardboard and plastic.

Panton is very famous for his unique chairs. In 1956, he entered a competition with a furniture collection. It included a chair where the seat and back were one single unit. This idea led to his famous S-Chair.
