People often call her a fashion icon. She helped change how young people dressed during that time. Her style was bold and different from older fashions. Many people believe she helped invent the miniskirt. She also worked on colorful tights and hotpants. Her work brought a new energy to the world of fashion.

Quant's way of working was very special. She opened a clothing shop called Bazaar on King's Road.

This shop was not like a quiet, boring department store. It was a lively place with music and drinks. She used quirky window displays to catch people's eyes. These displays showed models in funny or strange poses. People loved to stop and stare at her shop. In just ten days, she sometimes sold all her original items.

Mary Quant was born on February 11, 1930, in Woolwich, London. Her parents were both teachers from Welsh mining families.

She went to Blackheath High School as a student. Later, she studied art and illustration at Goldsmiths College. She earned her degree there in 1953. Even though she wanted to study fashion, her parents first encouraged other paths. She eventually became an apprentice to a milliner on Brook Street. This helped her learn the skills needed for her big career.

Quant had many famous successes throughout her life. In 1963, she won the very first Dress of the Year award.

She also worked with many different companies. By 1966, she was working with 18 different manufacturers. In 1967, she designed twelve different colored berets for Kangol. She even helped design a special Mini car in 1988. That car had black and white striped seats with red trim. She lived to be 93 years old when she died in 2023.

Her impact can be seen in many places today. The miniskirt is still a very famous part of fashion history.

She named the skirt after her favorite car, the Mini. She wanted women to be able to run and jump easily. This made her clothes feel much more free and youthful. Her name is even on special British postage stamps. Many people still remember her as a leader who changed the world of style.
