He was known for making clothes that looked elegant and sophisticated. He once called the art of dressmaking "the architecture of movement." This idea shows he thought about how fabric moves with a person. He started his own fashion house, called Maison Balmain, in 1945. His early clothes often had long, bell-shaped skirts and small waists. People loved his work because it was beautiful and easy to wear.

Making these clothes involved a lot of skill and planning. Balmain first studied architecture at the École des Beaux-Arts in 1933. This training helped him understand shapes and structures. He later worked for other designers like Edward Molyneux and Lucien Lelong. During World War II, he met a young designer named Christian Dior. Balmain also worked with many talented assistants and partners. One was Erik Mortensen, who became a close collaborator. Another famous designer, Karl Lagerfeld, even worked for Balmain in 1954.

Balmain's life began in France in 1914. His father owned a business that sold fabric. His mother, Françoise, ran a fashion shop called Galeries Parisiennes. As a young student, Balmain visited the town of Aix-les-Bains. There, he met many women who inspired his interest in fashion. He spent many years learning how to draw and design. He eventually became a leader in the world of high fashion. Even after he died in 1982, his influence stayed strong.

His career reached many different parts of the world. In 1947, he traveled to Australia to show his designs. He expanded to the United States in 1951 to sell ready-to-wear clothes. In 1955, he won a Neiman Marcus Fashion Award. Many famous people wore his designs, including Marlene Dietrich and Katharine Hepburn. He even designed clothes for Queen Sirikit of Thailand in 1960. Balmain also made outfits for the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble. He even designed uniforms for flight crews on airlines like TWA.

Balmain did much more than just make everyday clothes. He was a talented costume designer for movies and theater. He won a Drama Desk Award for his work on the play Happy New Year. He also created many different perfumes for people to wear. One of his most famous scents was called Vent Vert. Today, people still love his vintage gowns from many years ago. Famous stars like Zendaya and Angelina Jolie have worn them. His work continues to be a part of fashion history.
