Vernalization

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Some plants need a long period of cold to bloom. This important thing that happens is called vernalization. It happens when a plant feels the cold of winter. This cold helps the plant get ready to make flowers.

It ensures that flowers and seeds grow in the spring. This stops them from growing in the fall. Many plants in temperate climates must go through this cold stage. This way, they do not bloom too early in the year.

How does this work step by step? First, the plant must experience a long time of low temperatures. These temperatures are often between 1 and 7 degrees Celsius. We can measure this amount of cold in chill hours. This cold triggers a change inside the plant. After the cold, the plant gains the ability to flower. It might still need longer days or more growth time.

Then, the plant begins a process called bolting. This is when the flower stalk starts to grow long.

People have studied this for a very long time. In 1857, John Hancock Klippart wrote about how winter cold helps wheat grow. Later, a German scientist named Gustav Gassner studied it in 1918. He showed how winter plants are different from summer plants. In 1928, a man named Trofim Lysenko used a new word for this. He called it "yarovizatsiya" in Russian. He later translated it to "vernalization" from the Latin word for spring.

Scientists use a plant called Arabidopsis thaliana to learn more. This plant is a very helpful model for research. In this plant, a protein called FLC stops flowers from growing. It acts like a block on the flowering process. When the plant feels cold, it turns down the FLC protein. This happens through a process called chromatin remodeling. This changes how the plant's genes work.

Other genes like VRN1 and VRN2 also help the plant. These genes work with the light from the sun.

You can see this in the food we eat. Farmers know the difference between winter and spring cereals. Winter cereals need the cold to start growing. Spring cereals can be planted in the spring instead. Some growers even use "devernalization" to stop flowers. They do this with onion growers to make bigger bulbs. They want the plant to save energy for the bulb. This shows how much control we have over plant growth.
